Clearing a woody overgrown field?

Moved back to the homestead and I want to plant a large veggie garden. However the field, around 5 acres, has been left fallow for many years and is massively overgrown. I don’t own a tractor, and it is to too thick and large to tackle by foot. What would be the best way to clear the land. It is also part flood plain and has sinkholes near the riverside – so I don’t know about legal responsibilities if I would hire someone to come in and tractor it. I even thought of goats, but I can’t get through to put up a fence around it. Any farmers out there I would appreciate this advice and I’ve got a whole lot more questions where this one came from…

A project like this is really a question of time and money. If you have the money you can hire someone who does land clearing with heavy equipment. They would come in with a large front end loader or a bull-dozer and clear off any brush and trees that you don’t want to save. They could fill the sinkholes, level the land, etc..
A second way to approach this is to not do everything at once. Have someone come in with a tractor and mower and mow those parts of the property which can be done safely. They could probably do more than you think. This would leave some brush around the wet areas or sink holes which could be cleared by hand. It might get you to a point where you could fence the property and graze the pasture.
Another way to approach this is to clear a path along the property lines wide enough to build fence, then put in the grazing animals.
Longer term you will need to maintain the property after it is cleared. Mowing is important, but you can mow 5 acres with a garden tractor after you beat down the large weeds and brush.
I have done all of the above options. Heavy equipment tends to leave a mess afterwards, so I am not fond of this option unless it is absolutely necessary. Clearing fence lines or other brush by hand is work, but the main concern is the time it takes. If you have the time, patience, and persistence this often leads to the best final result.
