Importance Of Gears In Aeronautics

Gears undoubtedly have occupied a greatest place in the mechanical engineering. Name any mechanical device it is sure to have gears in on form or the other. Gears have found a wide range of applications in our lives. Similarly it has found a specific place in aviation and defense industries too.

Most commonly used gear type in aviation industry is spur gear. Spur gears are applied as pinions and the time for assembling thus gets reduced as only the axial positions of the face gears needs to be changed. A pinion with straight spur teeth axial load is not present. Gears which have oblique contact lines and high contact ratio will provide smoother meshing. Thus it results in zero backlash transmission which makes such gears highly suitable for aviation vehicles.

Such gear assemblies are capable enough to transfer power between two intersecting shafts which are available in helicopter rotor transmission. These gears can work even with an inadequate lubrication and thus enhances the reliability of the gears. Some other gears which are used here are rotor and pinion gears. If any alignment issues arise in case of rotor and pinion gears, spur gears can effectively work with such an alignment without any distraction. Face gears are also used here which are generally made of stainless steel, brass, steel and plastic. They are basically used to transmit motion rather than power.

Gear actuators are used in defense industry in the fighter aircrafts. In general gears are used in defense industry either as a component of various applications or as a component of the defense system itself. Specialized reduction gears are used to operate in navel vessels. Epicyclical gear boxes are largely used in defense industry as it provides power maintained gear change. They are also used in casings, CAS (Chassis and Automotive systems) and for automatic transmission.
